brand new cnn/orc poll by the way shows most voters expect president obama to be tonight's big winner. 56% of likely voters out there think the president will do a better job in the debates. only 32% say mitt romney will do a better job. that low number may be mitt romney's big opportunity though. let's discuss with our chief political analyst gloria borger. are these debates, gloria, always harder for incumbents? >> i think it is. you look at the expectation game. people understand that president obama is a great speaker, they've seen him do other debates in the past. and they kind of remember them and think he's the sitting president, he'll do a better job. so he's got expectations running against him. then the other thing for the challenger is remember, wolf, this is really the first time that mitt romney and barack obama will be at the same level. so just by showing up to a certain degree mitt romney gets elevated standing on the same stage with the president. and here's another thing about the president, he has to defend his record without seeming to be defensive about it.

footage on right wing websites and on fox news, a prepresidential barack obama can be heard praising his former pastor jeremiah wright. he talked in his speech about wanting to him all this sorts of help to poor people. then candidate obama was talking about iraq war veterans with post traumatic stress disorder. but i'm sure it's better politics for the right if they shorthand iraq war veterans as poor people while also calling mr. obama angry and describing him as having an accent. it's not subtle but i'm sure they think it's great politics. so tonight has been an unsettled big night. tomorrow night is going to make tomorrow look like a traffic camera on a desert highway. i'll be here in new york. chris matthews will be in denver.

president obama polls at 49% and mitt romney at 46%. tonight, night silver of the new york times blog, forecasts that on november 6 obama will win 318 votes and mitt romney will win 219. and president obama's chance of winning the election is now at 84.7%. joining me now john hiel man and krystal ball. when i see him out at hoover dam today, i think we are going to hear some sort of rachel like ode to hoover dam in the debate and the power of federal infrastructure spending and what it can do to this country and the economy. >> i think you're absolutely right. that is the core message. it's we're in it together versus you're on your own. and to that point, mitt romney still has never really come up with a coherent explanation, because there isn't one, for his comments about the 47%. so as they're talking about the zingers he's been preparing for this debate and how he's been practicing for months, there's no verbal strik to get you out of that box. and there's also nothing you can do to avoid the fact that your positions have changed so much from the primary to now and back and forth.
